Some of the comments on FB regarding the women had my blood boiling.

One in particular was some moron calling himself Trevor Chappelli who refered to the women as ‘harlots’ and reckons he could hit them all over the park.

The idiot probably would struggle to put bat on ball.

The work many have done to promote women’s sport is always hampered by idiots like this

Love your article. I too was uncomfortable with Gideon Haigh’s use of the term ‘gifted’ to suggest women are not otherwise entitled to play on the MCG. I was there when they won that test, as well as the WBBL final in December. They have played a couple of WBBL games there earlier in the season as well. Women’s footy (AFLW) is a long way behind in being granted access to big stadiums, with many excuses being given as to why.

Yes, I was surprised it hasn't been discussed more widely. Little slips like these from otherwise excellent journalists really highlight that we've got a way to go in reaching equality.

Thanks for a great article, Megan. I was reassured that most people - men and women - seemed to laugh at Latham. I've also noticed that some of those covering the Allan Border Medal, said it was 'disresectful' to not have the men's cricket team in attendance and it should not have been held while they were on tour. Nevermind that the packed schedule, what about all the 'Sports Awards Nights' that simply ignored the women's competition completely?

Yes, I heard those comments as well! For many years the women weren't even invited to the event and when they were they were often put on a table at the back and not allowed to bring guests. So I think the men can cope with the team missing one year.

Couple of things. Victorians have this weird thing where they feel that their sports and grounds are somehow better than everywhere and as such only the greatest teams and events should be there. Maybe that explains the ‘gifted’ tag. I dunno.

As a counterpoint to the Latham of the world, I watched maybe half of the Aussie men’s tests and not a single second of any of their one day or T20 games. I watched pretty much every ball of the women’s series I could. And loved it.

You make a good point about Victorians and I'm sure that attitude played into the comment. But I don't recall the same thing being being said when men's teams (including Australia at times) have had awful games there. Glad to hear you loved the women's series - I'm definitely with you there!
